Introducing Things We Do For Love

For the Borderline project our team is making something very ambitious. As if the project wouldn’t be hard enough on it’s own, we had to add a few scoops of toughness to it: we are making a fiction film.

After having made documentaries for a while I was eagerly looking for an opportunity to dig my teeth into a lengthy fiction film. I had a concept for this crazy road trip movie about a couple torn between two countries. So when I pitched the idea to Pedro he said straight away, yes, let’s make it happen.

In hindsight we must’ve been crazy, it takes a heck of a lot to set up a project like this. Going across Europe filming city to city and bringing along actors and extra crew. It’s mad.

So with the deadline quickly approaching, I transformed the meager outline into a full-fledged, kicking and screaming script. To make this happen I found an excellent writer (Hsin-Chi Berenst) to help me write the script.

Then when we finished a couple of drafts, sent it out for feedback, we started the casting process, looked long and wide and found two great actors to play Nuno and Sophie: Henrique Feller and Tiziana Benguerbi, both of which I worked with before and have great respect for.
Then I got an extra two crew members on board to join us for our trip. Art director and finance guru Hein de Borst and Frank van Dorth who is a superb editor, sound recordist and all-round film talent.

We had some scenes which were hard to do and had a big scope, so to be able to film those we shot them in Holland. This way we could have extra actors, banks of lights and an army of extras and film crew. All of this would not have been possible without producer Stephan Bolderman from Uncompressed film (a seriously cool guy). Then after that episode we set off with a fully loaded car on our trip to Paris.

The pre-production of this movie cost me blood, sweat, tears and a slight decrease in hairline. You have to be pretty nifty juggling all the separate things you have to keep an eye on. Thanks to our amazing crew though we are making this movie. It really  feels like a ‘home-game’ working with these guys. We have an excellent team and even though times are stressing, these guys incredibly lower the load. I’m proud of our team. They are a bunch of hipster cool cats.

So without further ado, here is the story:

The story:
After meeting Sophie, the love of his life, Nuno, a 23 year old guy from Porto has to choose between two worlds: stay with Sophie and be miserable and a stranger in Paris, or go back home to where his life and career is, leaving her behind.

Will a promising roadtrip bring them together or tear them apart?

So keep an eye out on this page for all the inside scoops and tidbits. It’s quite an adventure we are setting out onto, so stay posted and stay postal.
