Project Overview
BORDERLINE is a filmmaking workshop where 13 young filmmakers travel during a three week journey on a double-decker bus from Paris, France to Guimarães, Portugal in November 2012. The outcome of the project is 5 short films about immigration in Europe.
The project is designed and led by FEST – Associação Cultural and NISI MASA European Network of Young Cinema in association with the main partner Guimarães European Capital of Culture 2012.
For the last few years, NISI MASA has organized travelling film workshops on trains and boats, through Russia to Vladivostok, across Europe to Istanbul, and around the archipelago in the Baltic Sea. Many of the short films made under the frame of these traveling film workshops have gained a lot of international visibility, brought young filmmakers together across Europe and led to a bunch of experiences of a lifetime.
In November 2012, thirteen young filmmakers (aged 18-32) are taking part on a journey on a double-decker bus for another filmmaking experience in Europe. The specific route from Paris to Guimarães is be tailored to meet the filmmaker’s needs for their cinematic exploration.
The background frame of the trip from Paris to Guimarães lays is the notion that the city with the biggest Portuguese population outside of Portugal is Paris. A vast majority of immigrants arriving to Paris from the 50′s to 70′s came from Portugal.
The 13 filmmakers are taking the trip made by hundreds of thousands of expats – but now the opposite way, back to Portugal. The filmmakers taking part in the project have also the access to use the film archive, but the rest of the form and content of the 5 films made during the project are up to the initiatives given by the participants.
